Camtasia Tutorial, make your own custom Seamless, and Overlay Transitions
In the last version of Camtasia, more than 75 new transitions were added, bringing the total number of transitions to no less than 123 different transitions. But there may be occasions when you want to make your own custom stylish transitions. Perhaps a branded, special transition for your company or when you just want a unique look to your videos.
Below I created a video, showcasing how you can create your own custom transition, both as an overlay-styled transition, as well as a seamless transition. I’ve also added a few general thoughts on transitions.

What are Overlay and Seamless Transitions
So what’s the difference between Overlay and Seamless transitions anyway?
This is my own definition, and I’m sure there’s a better one out there, but in short, an Overlay transition is a transition placed in a layer above your cut, obscuring the cut between the two files.
A Seamless transition does not overlay the cut, but rather lets the video files, for lack of a better metaphor, “bleed or blend into each other”. It’s sometimes called an “invisible transition”.
Most of the transitions included with Camtasia are seamless, except for the ones you find in the category called “Solids”.
An advantage with Overlay transitions is that it can be a good way for presenter-styled videos to use between clips because you can actually add a message on the transition, to use them as part of the presentation.
They also are more visible and noticeable to the viewer, so if you want to clearly mark the transition, for example between chapters in your video, it’s can be a good way to separate sections of your video.
Seamless transitions are generally less noticeable, so they will be more useful when for example telling a story.
A good rule of thumb when it comes to transitions is that “less is more”. Try to not overuse transitions and keep it to perhaps no more than 3 different styles of transitions in your videos. Too many different transitions may divert attention away from your message.
